Some causes for increase in government expenditure are;

1. Growth of Democracy. For example, conduct of elections
2. Growth of Population. For example, increased birth rate, immigration, etc
3. Expenditure on Defence. For example, acquisition of arms
4. Expenditure on Welfare. For example, creation of jobs.
5. Poverty Alleviation Programmes. For example, creating of new schemes and skill acquisitions programmes by the government of Nigeria to reduce poverty in the country.
