Corn Roasting – another occupation in Nigeria
This is a seasonal occupation in Nigeria, that is to say it is not found at all times in the year. Corn season is usually between May – August. Personally, I have ensured that I eat corn coupled with Ugbe na Aki Oyigbo to its fullest during this season; I have spent about ₦1500 naira on these.
Corn roasters sell Ube (Pear) na Aki Oyigbo (Coconut) alongside with their corn because they are usually demanded and best eaten together. The occupation is dominated by the Igbo’s; they are the ones that are mostly involved in this form of occupation anywhere around Nigeria.
The price of corn ranges from ₦30 – ₦100 (I have never seen a corn big enough to be sold for ₦150), 1 piece of Aki oyigbo sells for ₦10, and 4 pieces of Ube sells for ₦50.
Corn roasting requires little knowledge and anybody can start the business without learning it; it is not a big job. But, this corn roaster learnt hers from her aunt. No of them uses stove or gas cooker to roast or cook their corn, the normal method for preparing this is the use of firewood and charcoal because it is far much faster and the even the best.
According to the seller, the business is lucrative because there is no business a person is doing that he/she cannot have profit from it. So, it is okay to her.
As a young lady, the business has benefited her because it is from it that she uses to sustain herself. After selling the corn, she uses the profit to buy certain things for her personal upkeep.
Sincerely, I advice other Nigerians to find something to do ; even if it is ₦1 or ₦2 naira that they are getting from it, it is something and they can use it to take care of themselves.
