Nigerian Mercy Ebuetse becomes Overall Highest in Engineering Technology Management in an American University.
Mercy who is one of the vibrant and focused going ladies in Nigeria has just made another giant move by being the overall best student in her Masters program in Engineering Technology Management, from Western Kentucky University, United States of America (USA).
Mercy did her undergraduate program in Covenant University, Nigeria where she majored in Civil Engineering. She is also the founder of Shalom Truths Magazine
These were her words;
I was the overall highest in Engineering Technology Management. For the flag-bearer, I am sure there were other students who may have had high GPA from Nigeria, however, I don’t know if it’s 4.0 GPA like mine.
Also, I had one merit-based scholarship from the international student office (Robert J. Wruster) Scholarship, a second scholarship – Lois G. and F. Dugan Montgomery Scholarship Fund for full time students in the Department of Architectural and Manufacturing Sciences in Ogden College of Science and Engineering. And a research grant for my capstone thesis.
To some other young ladies and gentlemen out there who are trying to know how she was able to achieve this. You can learn a little from the efforts she put in below.
What efforts did you put in place while studying?
During graduate orientation, I looked out for students who had gone through my program. I didn’t get great recommendations. They kept saying it was hard and that most people ended up leaving the program.
However, I was fortunate to finally meet someone who had gotten the best out of the program. I was prepared based on the reviews I had gotten. It was going to be tough but if I put in the work required, it would turn out fine for me.
- I attended all of my classes. (I may have only missed about 3/4 classes in 2years to attend conferences). This meant that I understood what the professors wanted since I had been in their classes. I go through course objectives and requirements occasionally to ensure that I was on track.
- Effective time management was key especially while I worked as a Graduate Research Assistant. What affected a few of my colleagues was procrastination and ineffective time management. Last minute papers always led to a rush. I wrote my papers and read for exams when I was relaxed. Which meant I had to start earlier.
- Goal setting – my goal was to learn and get an A in each of my courses. Even in courses that an A was deemed impossible.
- Masters is about reading ahead of classes. Be prepared. I was prepared for each class.
- Know yourself – honestly, what works for you is different from what works for others. My study time may not work for you. My study environment may also not work for you. So I understood what worked for me.
These were a few efforts that I put in place as a graduate student.
