Suya selling – another occupation in Nigeria
Suya is something almost every person has eaten, and wouldn’t deny that it tastes nice. So many funny questions like “Why is Suya always sold at night?” has been arising but I think the best answer is because that’s when people are back from work and wants to relax.
The Muslims especially the Hausa’s are the ones mostly engaged in this business and they are very skilled at it. You can see another occupations that the Hausa’s dominate by clicking here, here and here.
The “Suya Man” as they are usually called is a Muslim and an indigene of Plateau state who does his business in the Eastern part of the country because he makes more profit here. He said the Igbos just know how to eat Suya but can’t make it, that if he were to be doing his business at the North, he wouldn’t make much money because it is very common over there.
The Suya Man has been involved in the business for about 9 years. He was previously located at Iyiagu Estate where he did the business for 3 years before relocating to his present shop position along a minor road at Awka, Anambra State.

How much did you use to start the business?
I started this business with ₦ 15,000 as at 2007. I used it to buy both the sticks for the Suya, Firewood, Kerosene, Table and the roaster for the Suya.
Where did you learn this business?
I learnt the business from my brother back then at Plateau state. But, now he is here with me.
Tell us about your educational background?
I finished my secondary school and proceeded to study my Diploma in Mechanical Engineeering at Federal Polytechinic, Bauchi.
What are the various prices for the Suya?
The prices as at 2010 were ₦ 100, ₦ 200 and ₦ 300 but now, everything has gone up. So, they are now ₦500, ₦300, & ₦100 respectively.
The ones of ₦100 is just the intestines, livers and kidneys while ₦300 and ₦500 naira is the real flesh. Suya is usually wrapped in newspaper when purchased and something served with carrot, onions, and most importantly suya pepper;
What have you been able to Achieve with this business?
With this business, I have been able to pay my school fees, marry a wife (I wanted to marry an Igbo woman because they hate dirty. I love the way Igbo’s live their life, they are usually very neat.), build my house, and also assist my parents financially.
Where we started before, we usually sell more there but I Thank God and I pray for more sales.
What’s your advice to other Nigerians?
I advice others to engage themselves in something so that they wouldn’t be idle. This is life and as a man,you are not meant to be dependent on your parents, you will need to hustle for yourself.
