What is Depreciation?
Depreciation is a loss in value. The fixed assets of a business lose in value with the passage of time. In order to show their true market value and to prevent an overstatement of profits, it is customary to write down (reduce) their value in the company’s books of account from time to time. By this method, a fixed percentage of the reducing book value is written off each year.
