What are Graphs?

When two quantities are related in any way, it is often an advantage to show the relationship by means of a graph. The object of a graph is to convey information rapidly. The essentials of a good graph are neatness and clearness.

When constructing a graph, the following points should be remembered;

1.) The scale will be determined by the highest and lowest magnitudes. It should be as large as possible.
2.) The points representing the simultaneous values should be placed very carefully.
3.) The plotting or graphing (i.e. the joining of the points) should be done with very great care and neatness.
4.) The scale and names of the quantities should be distinctly indicated.
5.) It is usual to represent the fixed quantity along the horizontal line (OX) and the variable quantity along the vertical line (OY).
