FG Lambasts NFF Over $2 Million Compensation Clause In Rohr’s Contract

The Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Sports, Daniel Amokachi who made the carpeted the federation under Amaju Pinnick for inserting a whooping $2 million compensation package in the coach’s contract in any event he was sacked.

Fondly called “Da Bull” in his playing days, lamented NFF for not according former Super Eagles players, Sunday Oliseh and Emmanuel Amunike the needed support to excel despite their being more technically sound than the current occupier of the position, Gernot Rohr.

Rohr was employed as Super Eagles coach on August 9, 2016 on first two-year deal but that contract has been renewed on two occasions in 2017 and 2020.

The latest renewal with two-and-a-half-year extension which took place in May this has a compensation package of $2 million should NFF decides to sack the coach

“For the administration to bring somebody like Oliseh and not giving him time because he’s Nigerian and they let go,” Amokachi told Brila FM.

“To bring in somebody like Amuneke and not giving him time then they let him go. Then you bring a new coach where those two coaches are far better than him; pedigree-wise and portfolio-wise.

“But still, they gave the machinery a lot of money, $60 plus with all the bonuses, if they play two matches in a month, then you’re talking over $100,000.

“And then at the end of the day, you put a $2m clause on a coach that has never won anything. A coach that came from Burkina Faso to Tunisia then to Nigeria and you put a $2m clause, that’s the first I’m hearing such.

“If you were bringing Guardiola you can put $10m if he says he wants it because you know who he is; he has won laurels. But for a coach that has not done anything, not achieved anything and you put a $2m clause? There’s a lot of failure in that.

“I’ll not rate them (NFF) out of 10, but all these things I’ve broken down will tell anybody with common sense where I’m coming from.”

Gernot Rohr came under severe criticisms with many calling for his sack following a 4-4 and 0-0 draw against Sierra Leone in the matchday 3 and 4 encounters in the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON qualifying race played in November.

NFF President, Amaju Pinnick had told Nigerians that the federation cannot sack the German because doing so would come at a huge cost.

“If we sack Gernot Rohr, we will pay his salary from now till January 2023 when his contract expires, we will pay all his allowances, assuming all matches to be played from now till then would be won and we’d pay all the match bonus till then. We’d then pay compensation as damages and other charges. At the end of the day it could be as much as $3million. There are also political implications which I don’t want to talk about,” he explained.
