What is a Proportion?
A proportion is the equality of ratios. Therefore, 3/4 and 9/12 are equal, so we may say;
3 : 4 = 9 : 12
The sign of equality is replaced by the sign :: A proportion is usually written as follows:
3 : 4 :: 9 : 12
which is read as 3 is to 4 so is 9 to 12.
The first and fourth terms are called the extremes.
The second and third terms are called means.
The product of the extremes = the product of the means.
There are three (3) methods to solving proportions and they are;
- The Unitary Method
- The Rule of Three
- The Fractional Method
